ShipsDuring the 16th century, the need for more innovative boats were necessary for exploration. These include the Caravel, Galleon, and Dutch Ships. The Caravel was known for being cheap and for being good speed-wise and with maneuverability. The Galleon could not only be used for commercial purposes like trading and fishing but also a war ship. They had stronger ribs and bracings that allowed for less chance for wreckage. And lastly, Dutch ships were used for exploring, namely in the Northeast Passage to China and cargo traveling in India.

Magnetic CompassIn this time period, magnetic compasses came into existence to aid explorers in their sea oriented endeavors. Before this invention- seafarers in general were at risk of getting lost which often came with copious amounts of danger. For the first time they were able to know what direction they were headed. This was accomplished with the help of a magnetized needle and magnetic card, the concept itself adopted from the Chinese.

Lead LineAnother invention called the lead line came to fruition. It helped gauge the depth of the ocean and helped obtain samples of the ocean floor. They executed this by placing animal fat in a hole located at the very bottom of the lead line, which helped objects stick to it. It even helped sailors define the types of oceans they were traveling upon and helped them avoid bumping into reefs.
